Rogo Training Goal Results for September/October, and Goals for November

Here are our results for September and Goals for November. Rogo's sarcoid has been slowly growing, so it is scheduled for removal next week - thus I'm leaving Oct. out of the goal setting :) He'll be off for two or three weeks, but I may ride him bareback before that (the sarcoid is close to the girth area). We'll be rusty though, so maybe I shouldn't hope for too much regarding goals in Nov.
Generally speaking, everything needs to be more forward and he needs to be rounding more. He's schooling all of the Level One movements, some better than others, but the engagement he should have for this level isn't developed yet.
My equitation is another big goal. I've been for two lunge lessons in the last couple of weeks and want to have as many more as I can get. They are fabulous! More on them in an upcoming post. Needless to say, Rogo will be able to improve as I am able to ride him better. Building on that, sitting trot should start appearing here. Let's say a goal of being able to sit the working trot most of the time by the end of Nov. This will be good bare back work!

He is doing these (canter circles), but needs to engage his hindquarters more, round and move more lightly. Improving my riding will help this.

Rogo was a star when we started counter canter and did the circle and serpentine easily first time asked, thus I scored him high. I didn’t work on them and when I went back, they weren’t as solid as I thought, so I’m going back to working on the Level One loop for now.

Rogo was good at stretching forward and down, but the last couple of rides he goes straight down, with no forward. Also, he goes straight down with his nose to the ground for a few strides, then lifts his head again, then repeats. Any ideas as to cause?

I’m still having trouble getting Rogo to understand I’m not asking for anything more when we stop. He starts wiggling back and forth, trying to figure out what to do next.

You guys are doing great! I was reading down your list thinking about Jackson and going "nope. nope. nada."

From my instructor: A horse with problems on the stretchy circle (going down to the ground but not forward, up and then down again) means the rider needs more steadiness of the contact and drive from the seat into a receiving hand. (I have issues with asking for the stretch. I get nothing or Huey goes down but not forward or he does not go down and forward ENOUGH). The only 4 I ever got was on the stretchy circle in a Training level test.

I agree with Annette--you ARE doing great. You know what you need and what you lack regarding how Rogo goes. Our horses go the way we ride them, so it all comes back to US.

Re the halt: My horse is OTTB and some of our first rides involved standing still at the mounting block before I got on, my getting on and then waiting. Not every tacking-up experience meant GOING somewhere, in other words. Racehorses don't stand still when the jockey gets the leg up, so I had to work on that with Huey.

When you halt, sit still. Rogo will get the idea that halt is GOOD and an immobile halt is wonderful ;o) If you shift your seat or look down at your shadow (to see if the halt is square) or fuss with the reins, he will move, thinking you want something more.

Good luck with the sarcoid surgery. Have a friend with a w/b she has renamed Bill (Vet Bill ;o) and one of his vet visits involved sarcoids.

Thanks you guys! Annette - you're too kind. You guys are doing great, and you missed a lot of time. TB Dancer - I appreciate your trainer's feedback. I sensed it was related to my contact because I can feel that he's reaching but I think I've been giving it away instead of letting him feel a steady contact with the bit. Also the driving seat makes sense - pushing him into a soft contact. He did better in the past - reaching forward and down - but I think I must have messed up the contact and now have this. Hopefully I can nip it in the bud and get back on track before it's ingrained. Thanks!
It seems to me that you've achieved a lot together. Everything takes time and patience along with correct riding cues. The more consistent you are with your cues the easier it will be for Rogo to understand what you want. Good luck with the surgery and your goals. I think lunge lessons are a great training tool. Hope you get to do more.

That is a nice way to summarize your progress.

We can do a nice stretchy trot at home, but our stetchy trot in shows is never impressive. We show very infrequently so I feel that Harley just isn't relaxed enough to offer a nice stretch. Of course this affects our overall performance, but I am just not into showing enough to take him out more.

As you may have read at my blog, we have been working on the counter canter lately. We seem to have an easier time with the full diagonal and corners than the First Level loop. I always feel like the shallow loop is awkward. Any advice?

The experience in that department doesn’t matter much.

This is where it can get very explicit when it comes to phone chat.
For most women talking on a sex based phone line is like acting in
a movie, but you can do this with curlers in your hair and your figure doesn’t matter.

We agree that the Iolite Vaporizer looks cute and small,
but is it as powerful as the internet makes
us believe. Excess water runs off into a drain, eliminating the collection
of mineralized water and associated deposits and
also the risk of airborne bacteria. It produces the pure vapor
without any harmful effects that helps to cure some illness such as sinus
problems; throat infection and common cold etc make you physically strong.

Parents can wield the biggest influence over their children
by setting a good example and discussing smoking, its dangers, and expressing their desire for their children not to smoke.
Eating small meals throughout the day, as well as several snacks may help ease
